The days of the great naturalists are over because (1) men have been
separated from their environmnent--they are too busy in compulsory school
learning what someone else wants them to learn. They are so busy trying
to memorize other's accomplishments, they don't have time to live quietly
and follow their own pursuits like with Alexander Graham Bell, Faraday,
the Wright Brothers, etc. I read that Faraday was scorned because he did
not understand the mathematical formulas that others used to record his
discoveries. (2) Men are made to believe that only "schoolboys" with
fancy degrees are smart enough to invent things when in actuality, the
schoolboys are among the least creative people around. They can only deal
with the "facts" and personalities that they have worked so hard to
memorize. I can remember when I was considering graduate school how when
I read these writings, I found it very difficult to do so. I've read
extensively, but to this day, I find it very hard to read the writings of
graduate students in practically any field. There is a spirit that takes
over. They have opened themselves to the opinions of others so fully that
there is no room for anything but what they have learned.
