[Man: The Image and Glory of God, 2-26-09] Dear Mephibosheth: Here are my a list of my thoughts in response to the questions about ancient manhood. > One more thing--there are numerous fine > examples of ancient manhood in the scriptures--what made these men the > image of God? God created man in His image (Genesis 1:27 & I Corinthians 11:7). > What made Adam God's image and glory? What did he do? God put Adam in the garden of Eden to "dress it and to keep it" (Genesis 2:15). God brought every beast and fowl to Adam to see what he would call them. Adam named them (Genesis 2:19). God gave Adam dominion over God's creation on earth (Genesis 1:28). God gave Adam commandments to obey. God made Adam responsible directly to God. > Finding the answer to our question about man being the image and > glory of > God may be as simple as listing out the characteristics UNIQUE TO > MEN in > the Bible. > Their actions, communications, garments, abilities, > perceptions, creative power, etc. must reveal the answer. Woman as a > subset(?) of man and helpmeet may also provide clues.] > • Man works (Genesis 3:19), just as God worked. Genesis 2:2 says, "And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made." (The Godly man is diligent in his work. The foolish, effeminate, and ungodly try to refrain from work. Proverbs 13:4) • Man works to provide food and shelter for himself and his family, to provide for the poor and for the church, and to pay the tribute required in the land. (Work as found in the Bible is direct-- if you need something, make it. Work directly satisfies one's needs.) • Man leaves his father and mother and cleaves unto his wife (Genesis 2:24). • Man rules over his wife (Genesis 3:16). • Man goes to war. Man defends his family and land (Number 1:3-4). • Man rules his house (Joshua 24:15). • Man is strong (Proverbs 20:29a). • Man is the ruler over people (Exodus 18:21). • Man is the father, and brings up his children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). • Man speaks in the church (I Corinthians 14:34). • Man serves as the bishop and deacon (I Timothy 3:2). • Man is not deceived as quickly as women (1 Timothy 2:14). • Man has his head uncovered, especially when praying and prophesying (I Corinthians 11:4 & 7). • Man has short or shaven hair (1 Corinthians 11:14) • Man is bold and fearless. • Man is less concerned with emotions and feelings. • Man is independent! • Men were the artificers, builders, and workmen who wrought, repaired, amended, and hewed for Solomon's temple (2 Chronicles 10:10-12). • More is required of the man than the woman, for he holds God's image, and has been given more responsibility and authority . Isaiah 3:2-3 lists many positions and characteristics of the men of Israel: "mighty.. man of war... judge... prophet... prudent... ancient... captain... honorable.. counsellor... cunning artificer... eloquent orator." This is powerful. Man and women are not at all similar or equal as I have been led to believe growing up. I understand I Corinthians 11:3 much more... Your friend, Youngman P.S. While praying about these things, a song came to me. I called it "A Pastor's Prayer."
