HOW WE USED THIS CHART
I printed out this chart in a large font size (it covered two pieces of printer paper--landscape orientation) mounted it on posterboard and hung it up on the wall. It gives the main theme of each chapter of Romans. As we went through our study, it served as a constant reminder of the layout of the book of Romans.
- On day one I gave her an overview of the whole book and then for each class thereafter, we'd consult the chart for chapters already covered and the one we were on at that time.
- As we went through these amazingly laid out arguments, I would remind Hannah of the theme of the book of Romans, which is , "the just shall live by faith". Like a lawyer, Paul laid down his premise and then set to work proving it. Both Gentile and Jew are so bad that NOBODY is going to be justified because they are good. NOBODY. The only way anyone can be right is through faith.
- We really dug down into chapters 1-3 which are critical if one is to understand the unrivaled power of gospel and the miserable state of unregnerate man.
- After proving his point in chapter 3, Paul goes on to give us the illustrious example of Abraham in chapter 4, who was justified by faith way back in Genesis.
- In chapters 5-8, we saw the results of justification by faith, which is a SANCTIFIED life, not a return to the same old vomit and mire.
- We continued on our journey as we entered chapter 9 and learned about Israel's unbelief as a nation.
- In chapter 10, Christ Jesus is highly magnified as the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. This is powerful teaching.
- In chapter 11, we learned that the children of Abraham will one day turn to the Lord.
- In chapters 12-16, we explored various precepts for walking as a Christian.
