Dear Vigilant Watchman:

...Jan Amos Comenius, Protestant Czech educator, wrote "Labyrinth
of the World," an excellent piece of allegorical literature that shows the
folly of the world (http://www.oldlandmarks.com/labindex.htm).
Somehow by God's almighty grace
and appointment, I came across Comenius' pedgological writings early. I
do not know how. They have had an incalculable effect in our school but I
cannot give too many particulars as to how, but I do have copius notes
and printouts concerning this that I can access and review.

At some point, I realized that the
progressive "educators" took Comenius' writings and turned them inside
out. He is often referred to as, "the father of modern education". If he
were to see this mess, he would abhor it. I did not accept all his
ideas--but he had many powerful ideas such as being able to represent
anything, no matter how big it is, in a single picture. We was an
innovator. Before him children were beaten into memorizing lessons and
most girls did not go to school. He called the schools "slaughterhouses
of the mind". I think that it was while I was reading his Great Didactic
that he let me know to use models to teach anatomy.

I have one a quote about Comenius that said something like this,
"Next to Jesus, he may have been the best friend that children ever had."
I thought that was such a beautiful thing to be able to say about someone.
I plan to do a memorial of him with a picture on the index page in the
"Pedagogy" section.
